Curriculum Intent Writing
At Wadsworth Fields Primary School we provide children with a challenging and engaging writing curriculum that:
- Regards all children as writers. That they will not only be able to write, but that they want to write.
- Enables children to express themselves clearly, confidently and imaginatively, using a wide vocabulary, both verbally and through writing.
- Ensures transcription is efficient, enables clarity and not impede children’s expression.
- Encourage children to understand the audience and purpose for their writing, and adjust the style and content accordingly.
- Will develop and automaticity of core skills in order to build the foundations for more complex skills.
- Ensures that children plan, draft, edit and publish extended pieces of writing, using feedback from teachers and peers to identify areas for improvement.
- Enables children to construct grammatically sound sentences which show increasing control and manipulation for meaning as they progress through school.
- Teaches the meta-language necessary to be able to discuss their writing.
Foundation Stage
Children are encouraged to listen, speak and communicate purposefully from the beginning of their time in school. Their ability to convey their desired messages is developed through modelling, play and exposure to a rich and varied vocabulary.
Writing requires good motor control and so this is developed through exposure to a range of manipulatives allowing children to develop the vital skills needed before more formal writing skills emerge.
Children are introduced to mark making as a way of giving a written message before starting to learn a more formal written code.
Years 1-6
Children enter Year 1 able to use known graphemes to form words and sentences. As they move through Key Stage 1 they learn to add more detail into their writing and develop an understanding of different purposes. The focus on the development of vocabulary is maintained through exposure to stories and specific learning of topic based words. Spelling is supported through phonics teaching as part of the Rocket Phonics programme.
In Key Stage 2 children are exposed to an ever widening variety of writing purposes and are encouraged to add more depth of meaning into their work through the inclusion of varied punctuation, intentional choice of both vocabulary and grammar. Children are exposed to high quality literature to enable them to draw upon their reading and knowledge of the techniques used by experienced authors.
