Curriculum Intent Reading

At Wadsworth Fields Primary School we provide children with a challenging and engaging reading curriculum that ignites creativity, sparks curiosity and stimulates imagination. Through a carefully sequenced progression model, children are taught the behaviours that they will need to be discerning readers as they read frequently and widely using self-regulation strategies and discuss what they have read.

This curriculum is delivered through synthetic phonics, a linked approach to whole class reading, home reading, regular opportunities for independent reading and hearing quality texts read aloud. All of these are essential components as they offer the range of opportunities needed to develop fluent, enthusiastic and critical readers. Our younger children will learn to read, progressing onto reading to learn as they move through the school. Before leaving Wadsworth, we aim for all children to be proficient readers so that they are able to access education beyond primary school. We believe that reading is integral to a child’s understanding and appreciation of the world around them. Reading is a life skill which opens many doors to the future.
