Curriculum Intent
At Wadsworth Fields Primary School we provide children with a challenging and engaging maths curriculum which follows the National Curriculum and includes a mastery approach. This encourages all children to be confident mathematicians regardless of background. This starts in the Foundation stage where children are supported to develop strong mathematical concepts. Progression from years 1- 6 is ensured using the White Rose programme which is carefully planned and sequenced, allowing children to be confident with the area of maths they are learning. In the classroom, children are supported, guided and encouraged to engage in lessons and learning. Understanding is reviewed and challenged by completing a range of fluency, reasoning and problem solving activities. We aim for children to have an enthusiasm for maths, be confident to tackle problems and have the skills needed to continue to be the best mathematicians they can be. Our aim is that children leave as confident mathematicians equipped with the skills they need to succeed in life.
Foundation Stage
Children use Numberblocks to support their learning from EYFS Framework. This includes daily sessions with Number Blocks as well as both independent and teacher led activities.
Children have a range of representations available to them including tens frames and numicon.
Years 1-6
Lessons are based on the White Rose scheme of learning. These lessons are linked to the national curriculum and ensure that children practise and apply the relevant skills for their age.
In addition to this, to ensure children gain a deeper understanding in Maths we use a range of problem solving and reasoning activities. Problem solving methods are specifically taught so that children develop a range of possible approaches they can draw upon when meeting a new question, puzzle or problem.
Representations
Children are taught using the CPA method (concrete, pictorial and abstract) allowing their understanding to be well scaffolded and links made. This means that children will use equipment or real objects (concrete), images or drawn representations (pictorial) as well as more formal mathematical methods (abstract).
The image below gives an example of some of the range of pictorial representations children might come across in school.
Curriculum Overview
Multiplication Check
All children in Year 4 take the national multiplication check.
To prepare for this there is a focus on number fluency starting with number bonds in foundation stage moving to multiplication fact recall by the end of Year 2. In Key Stage 2 children use Times Tables Rock Stars to increase their accuracy and speed of recall as well as completing weekly times table quizzes.
